It's been four years since Röyksopp released their last studio album The Understanding. Follow up Junior due this spring.

It’s still the dawn of the New Year but the growing list of great albums to be released in 2009 makes getting up in the frosty morning more interesting. Along with Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys, Norwegian electronic act Röyksopp deliver a new full length album with club heavy hooks and chillout moments.

The dreamy House duo announced on their website that new album Junior is slated for March 23, 2009. The album comes preceded by the Happy Birthday EP, a self-indulgent tease of things to come, available for free from the band’s official website.

Robyn Guests on Junior

Junior, to be released via Astralwerks, was written, arranged and produced by the duo comprising of Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland. This time around Röyksopp enlisted several guest vocalists to add to their wistful electronic landscapes in addition to their own vocals.

The Knife’s Karin Dreijer-Andersson and Scandinavian singer Anneli Drecker have lent their pipes to the new disc as has Swedish dance/ pop one woman show, Robyn.

Of the four year gap between records, the band wrote on their website, "Every once in a while we surface to share our music and shed some light in an otherwise bleak reality. And that time is soon upon us, ladies & gents".

Though the album won’t be available until the last half of the month, Röyksopp plan to release the first single from the album, "Happy Up Here", on March 9, 2009.

Röyksopp from Melody A.M. to The Understanding

The band reformed in 1998 after a brief stint apart. In 2001, Röyksopp released their first full length album Melody A.M., which became a worldwide success, fueled by the single “So Easy”. Their downbeat style of music can be compared to the likes of Air’s Moon Safari or Goldfrapp (circa Felt Mountain and last year’s Seventh Tree).

Two other tracks from Melody A.M., "Eple" and "Poor Leno”, quickly became chillout classics and featured on numerous compilations in the early years of the decade. Bouncing off the success of that album, the duo went on to remix tracks by Beck before returning to the studio to cut their follow up album.

Junior follows The Understanding, an album that did away with the more nocturnal aspects of their previous efforts in favor of a more traditional approach to song structure and a sound closer to pop than chill or downbeat. The Understanding spawned the UK top 40 hit "Only This Moment" which also made No. 18 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play in the US and "What Else Is There?" which peaked at number 8 on Billboard's Hot Dance Singles Sales chart.

Royksopp’s Junior will be released on March 23, 2009.
